An Insider Interview With the Head of Shopzilla’s EU Publisher Programs

diana-scharpenberg-online-marketingWhat better way of getting an insight into the Shopzilla UK Publisher Program than listening to what Diana Scharpenberg, (Mgr, Online Marketing) herself has to say about the program? We asked Diana, who heads up Shopzilla’s EU Publisher programs, a few questions on affiliate marketing and the programs themselves.

Emma: Hi Diana, thanks for taking the time out to do this for us. It’s a great way for our readers to check out the program from an insider perspective. First of all, can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your experience in the online industry?

Diana: Hi Emma, I’ve actually been with Shopzilla about four years now in my role as Online Marketing Manager. The UK affiliate program was launched just over a year ago with the French and German programs following shortly afterwards. Personally, I’m now completely immersed in the affiliate world, not only because I work in the industry but also because I run a couple of my own personal sites, so I know how the story goes on both sides of the fence; being an affiliate myself who uses various programs as well as running Shopzilla’s. Before that, I actually studied Aviation in Germany (my home country) and went on to work in an online marketing role for Lufthansa.

Emma: Wow, sounds like exciting stuff! Four years is quite long…so you must know the company pretty well now?

Diana: Absolutely. I’ve worked with a lot of people here on a lot of different projects so there’s never a dull moment. It’s a fantastic company to work for so I was happy to launch the Publisher program. I welcome the opportunity to work with new Publishers everyday and the program’s steady growth since its launch confirms just how great an affiliate program it is.

Emma: So what do you look for in new Publishers? And do you have any advice to website owners who would like to try their hand at affiliate marketing?

Diana: For the most part, we look for quality websites. That is to say, Publishers who have great content, an already existing user/visitor base and generally a well established site. The program is free to join and pays on a CPC based model so to those affiliate marketers who wish to get started, try us out! My advice would be to really focus on matching the content of your site to your advertising. There’s no point having a site about golf, for example, and including our cosmetics banners. It just wouldn’t work. We take traffic quality very seriously and monitor it very closely for all Publishers. The Shopzilla Publisher Programs will only work if you take traffic quality as seriously as we do.

Emma: Could you give us a brief overview of the banners/products Shopzilla’s program offers?

Diana: Sure. We have a multitude of options in our Publisher portal including dynamic banners, text links, search boxes, stock banners and product pods which are all easily accessible in the portal. For the more experienced affiliate marketers, we also offer FTP Data Feeds and a soon to be released Catalogue API solution (September 2010). These last two really give affiliates even wider access to Bizrate’s inventory for a great comparison shopping integration. My favourites are actually the dynamic banners as you can not only choose the products you want to promote but also change the look to match your site’s design.

Emma: You mentioned Bizrate - why not Shopzilla?

Diana: Ah, the company origianlly started out as Bizrate but changed it’s corporate name to Shopzilla a few years later. We still have both the Bizrate and Shopzilla sites which run parallel but it is Bizrate itself which powers the Publisher Program.

Emma: I see. And what kinds of products can I advertise through the Shopzilla UK Publisher Program?

Diana: Pretty much anything. We have a broad range of products from niche to large scale, from clothing to perfumes and TVs to iPods. To find a particular product in our portal, it’s a really good idea to browse Bizrate’s site to find the product you want to promote. You just need to know the category tree of that product to then be able to find it in the Publisher portal.

Emma: Great advice there. One last question - as a Publisher I would want to know how my revenues are accrued. Can you give us a brief lowdown on earnings and redirects?

Diana: So as a starting point, earnings are accrued on a CPC based model whereby redirects sent through to our merchants generate earnings. As already mentioned, we are a very quality-focused affiliate program so actually have a system in place called Smartpricing which is not unlike Ebay’s Quality Click Pricing Strategy or the Google quality scores (amongst other quality assurance initiatives). This enables us to monitor the quality of traffic Publishers send through to our merchants. For high quality traffic there is great potential for high revenues and similar to other affiliate programs, these revenues are then paid out on a monthly basis, when the Publisher hits a £50 benchmark.

Quality Content is the New King

Recently I read a post from Remarka Blogger about Quality Content which inspired me to delve a little deeper into the theory that “quality” content is the new king, and success is no longer just centered around any old garbled musings on the web.

Shopzilla and our affiliate program are both very focused on traffic quality and since the very launch of the first Shopzilla UK Publisher Program, we have had a system in place not unlike Ebay’s Quality Click Pricing Strategy.

So, why are affiliate programs becoming concerned with the quality of traffic from their affiliates?

Shopzilla has always evaluated and monitored publishers’ traffic with our Smartpricing strategy. It can take years to build up merchant relationships and so we like to make sure that both parties our happy with the results. For higher quality traffic publishers may also be rewarded by us, and so it pays to provide great content.

How do we know it is the quality of the content and not just the amount we write that can influence a site’s success?

This is a difficult one which needs to be broken down into several mini sections. When it comes to Page Rank and SERPs, Google’s algorithm is as yet an undisclosed complexity of determinants. One of which is seemingly the frequency at which new and fresh content is posted on a site. This doesn’t seem to define “quality” though. However, if you take visitor numbers into account, which Google undoubtedly does when it crawls your site, a high trend in visitors must mean your site is worth reading. Thus, the more unique visitors who come to your site and the more who then return is surely an indicator of the site’s great content. This in turn Google sees and pushes your website higher up the ranking. And so the circle continues.

What’s more, if a site provides great content for its users (thus reaching high visitor numbers and a high page rank) and perhaps displays a dynamic banner containing products relating to that particular subject next to the review/post, you are more likely to have a higher click-through-rate (CTR) and higher conversions.

Higher quality content = more visitors = more clicks = higher revenues.

Simple, no?

It must be stressed, however, that Google never discloses the actual full list of algorithms needed to achieve success with a website. So, keep producing that great content and you are well on your way.

So how do you turn your content into quality content?

Write about a subject you know.

If you’re just starting out the best idea is always to write about something you know about well. This way, perhaps without realising it you are already providing that quality by offering first hand information and advice to those who do not undertand the subject as well as yourself. Visitors will keep coming back for more of your tips and tricks or a general read around the topic if you give them something to feast on. They are then more likely to stay loyal - if they like what they see, they will come back time and time again and begin to trust your musings. In Google’s eyes this is not only great for SEO but also can help create a “quality” site.

Choose your medium.

Not everybody has a natural ability to write, and write well. Some websites I’ve come across in my everyday ‘Googling’ moments should, frankly, see the bottom of the dustbin. Others, however, find a way to inspire through their words. If writing is not for you, blogging is perhaps not the best way to go about distributing your material. There are plenty of other high traffic mediums available. If you’re a natural in front of the camera, give Youtube a go and create your own video blogs. Or why not try Podcasts if your have a flair for talking and impress with you radio voice.

Ask for feedback.

There are various affiliate events each year at which you have the opportunity to network and speak to some of the industry’s leading experts. Ask their opinion. Most people are only too happy to help as they themselves had to start somewhere.

Determination.

Keep going! The more practice you have at blogging, writing, video-blogging or whatever type of content medium you choose, the better you will become at it. Remember that it is just like riding a bike…once you get the hang of it, you’ll never forget. A lot of people in the internet industry  give up when they don’t see results immediately. With affiliate marketing this is, in pretty much all instances, never the case. It takes hard work a and effort over a period of time. If you are writing about a product or subject area in which you specialise, your content will be considered of high quality in no time.

Finally, remember that there is no specific definition to “quality content”. It depends on the niche you are in, the kind of information you are passing on to your visitors, how you handle your affiliate marketing and finding the right affiliate program for you. As long as you keep your readers interested, I’d say you’ve done a pretty good job in the quality stakes.

To us here at Shopzilla it’s very important that we send quality traffic to our merchants. We closely monitor the quality of all traffic sources.  It would be unfair if the poor sources were subsidised by the better sources, which is why our SmartPricing is in place. It is a system designed to give well-performing Publishers an incentive to reach the maximum CPC rate possible with Shopzilla.

What exactly is SmartPricing?

SmartPricing is a model employed by Shopzilla to ensure the sending of high quality traffic to our hundreds of merchants. The clicks to merchants are adjusted according to a publisher’s overall traffic performance.  This means that the amount we charge a merchant for each click will be based on the publisher’s overall traffic quality.

We evaluate the quality of traffic from our distribution partners by measuring the conversion rate; the merchants’ click charges may be discounted based on the value of that traffic.

SmartPricing will be applied if your traffic quality does not meet our expectations. So if your traffic quality concerns us then we’ll inform you before we make any adjustments to your SmartPricing, and try to work with you to help ensure higher quality.

Don’t forget that if you continuously send us quality traffic (visitors who buy/are likely to buy products on the merchants’ sites) we will review your SmartPricing banding and may increase it so that you receive higher revenue for your efforts.

Using our affiliate program there are a few steps that you can take to ensure the highest quality traffic:

  1. Ensure that the BizRate content which is displayed is relevant to the content on your site.
  2. Try linking to BizRate rather than to merchants directly (if you are not already using this method)
  3. Geo-target BizRate content to UK-sourced traffic only.

As the Shopzilla’s affiliate program is based on sharing revenue, if you earn less, we earn less; so it’s in our best interests to help you increase your traffic quality. Although your potential earnings may drop if we have to make SmartPricing adjustments, this does not mean your Rev-Share percentage has changed.
