E-Marketing Conference 2010

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Last week saw two members of the UK Publisher Team head off to Paris to exhibit at the E-Marketing Conference 2010.

Almost 200 exhibitors and 250 attendees walked the halls of the conference to share best practices, experiences and new developments in Digital Marketing.

Yohan, our French national here on the team and Emma, who helps Yohan look after the French market, mingled with all their fellow affiliates from across the channel, representing Shopzilla in stand number 152.  They got to meet some really interesting people (sampling the delights of Paris at the same time!) and even had the chance to catch up with some of their lovely existing French partners.

Keep an eye on this jet setting duo…they may just happen to be present at other conferences this year (A4u and E-Commerce amongst others) both in the UK and abroad. For dates to put in your diary watch this space.

Publisher Spotlight: interview with Carl, martial arts expert and owner of shadowhand.com

Thursday, December 10th, 2009
Carl Burgess has been involved in web development for over twelve years as a system administrator, developer, tester and site owner. He is a respected author, teacher and international referee of Taijiquan who likes to push the boundaries of his art and how to disseminate it on the web. Here he talks about his site shadowhand.com and his experience with the Shopzilla UK Publisher Program.

Emma: Hi Carl, first of all, thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule to answer our questions. Could you start off by giving us a little introduction about your site?

My site, www.shadowhand.com, has been going for about ten years now and is focussed on the Wudang Style of Taijiquan which is the The martial arts form of T’ai Chi.  I teach from home and decided to start my blog, www.shadowhand.com/blog on how I set up my home dojo. I will start adding my teaching material  at some stage.

Emma: What inspired you to start up the shadowhand blog, why this particular subject?

I have written a book and produced a number of CDs and articles but felt that a more flexible approach was needed to convey what I am doing now.  I generally video my lessons and would like to add commentary and clips on a regular basis rather than taking months to produce a completed full  blown work.

Emma: You’ve been with the Shopzilla UK Publisher Program for a while now – how are you finding it?

It  takes some time to work out how to tailor the ads to your content – i.e what size, colour , shape, orientation etc  so I have been experimenting with all variants to see what works best.
It is good to have a choice of ad type to choose from and be able to configure colours etc.

Emma: I see you’ve added several of our large dynamic assets…how did you find the implementation process?

The Shopzilla system is fairly straightforward to use , the key is to search for your particular subject matter in the BizRate.co.uk site to check on what keywords will find the particular items you want to show and then use those keywords in the Publisher admin to find the appropriate ads. I thought  it was important to match the ads chosen to the particular content  I was writing about to keep it contextual. For example, if I write about boxing gloves, I’ll include an ad showing the gloves, or if you take a look at my headgear post, I’ve integrated an ad displaying items of headguards and head protectors.

Emma: What’s important to you in an affiliate partnership? Are you using any other programs?

Basically good communication, ease of use of the administration system. I am also affiliated with Amazon and Hong Kong Flix. For me, the partnership with Shopzilla’s Publisher program has been a great experience and one that I look forward to continuing.

Emma: How often do you consult our Publisher blog? Do you find it useful in keeping up to date with what’s going on in the Shopzilla Publisher world?

I am a very busy person and so I don’t have much time keeping up with what everyone else is doing. I probably focus about once a month to check up on the statuses of everything.

Emma: And finally…do you have any feedback for us here at Shopzilla i.e. suggestions for improvement?

Maybe some style guidelines for websites which have different layouts i.e. multi-column pages – or perhaps some page templates that fit the ad types might be of help.

Thanks for some great info and feedack, Carl. If you’d like to take a peek at his site, please visit Carl’s  martial arts blog.

Beginner’s Guide to Affiliate Marketing

Friday, December 4th, 2009

So you’ve just gotten into the world of Affiliate Marketing (otherwise known as AM) and wondering where to start? When you know what you’re doing it’s easy, but when you don’t, you may feel slightly overwhelmed by all the information suddenly thrust upon you.

Start learning about affiliate marketing today

Start learning about affiliate marketing today

What is Affiliate Marketing?

“Affiliate marketing is an Internet-based marketing  practice in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate’s marketing effort” (definition by Wikipedia). There are literally tens of thousands of companies wanting you to promote their products online. It can be very profitable when practiced wisely and correctly.  The main goal is to drive visitors to your website in order to get vital clicks on your site’s ads which can be in the form of creative banners, text links, search boxes and product pods amongst others. Shopzilla’s Publisher program has many formats for you to choose from.

How does it work?

As a good affiliate marketer you should have many (if not all) of the following attributes:

  • Determination - affiliate marketing does not make you rich overnight. It can be a tiring process that involves determination and hard-work
  • Self belief - you have to believe that it will work
  • Self discipline - the more often you can write posts/content on your site, the better your site, therefore the higher the likelihood of increased revenue
  • Imagination - great content is the key to affiliate marketing. This keeps your visitors coming back for more! Play around with various content and subject ideas, get creative and try out what works best for you and your site
  • Ability to stick with a project - this ties in with determination; make one project great, rather than lots of little projects average
  • Focus - know what you want to write about and stick to it
  • Patience - there can often be difficulties and frustrations that you encounter along the way; don’t give up

You will need to be committed as this is a long-term process; remember that you only get paid if and when you deliver results.  Have a look at our SEO (Search Engine optimisation) tips post for more detailed advice on optimising your site.

One of the best tips we can actually give you, is to start off by joining one or two affiliate programs to familiarise yourself with the way it all works, and join those that offer contextually relevant ads. It is widely known that targeting your visitors with ads that correspond to your content or subject area will more than likely increase the chances that your readers will click. If you’re worried about the ethics behind affiliate marketing, however, (a topic often widely debated), you needn’t worry. Follow our ethical hints for peace of mind.

Benefits of affiliate marketing:

  • Monetise your website: it may often be a form of passive income - even if you go away on holiday, if you have great content your visitors will still be coming regardless of whether you are online yourself.
  • Add shopping content for the readers: this will be useful, especially if you can also provide reviews
  • No selling responsibilty: you don’t need to sell your own product but you can make money by promoting those of others. You have no responsibility for the after-sales service or stock and delivery as it is all handled by the merchant.

How do I make money?

You promote products and are rewarded for your efforts. This is all possible because the traffic you send/the sales you make are tracked to you and each affiliates website link is encoded with a unique ID tracking code. This tags the traffic or sale to your account.

It is worth mentioning that many programs operate in different ways and choosing the right one depends on various factors such as the content of your site, the number of visitors you recieve or your own objectives. (*Note: many programs offer efficient reporting tools which make it easy to compare the success off different approaches. Shopzilla tries it’s best to help you compare us against other programs. Read more..) You will undoubtedly have come across the various payment models which include:

1. CPC (cost per click) – The visitor clicks on a link through the affiliate website.

2. CPA (cost per action) – The visitor purchases a product or a service. It could represent any call for action that took place.

- CPL (cost per lead) – The visitor completes a lead form (variant of the CPA model)

- CPS (cost per sale) - The visitor purchases a product or service (variant of the CPA model)

3. CPM (cost per 1000th impression) - The affiliate is paid for every 1000 ad impressions

Depending on the type of program you sign up for, you may experience one or all of these methods.  Experiment and find the best which works for you. It is worth noting that the Shopzilla UK Publisher program pays on a CPC-based model (there aren’t many programs that do offer this) and is free to join so test it out for yourself and see how much you can earn.

It’s a lot to get your head around and there is certainly a vast amount left unsaid. However, keep an eye out for further hints and tips or please feel free to contact us if you have any questions, we will be happy to assist.

Optimising your Article for SEO

Friday, November 20th, 2009
SeoJoBlogs Jo Turnbull is an SEO strategist who began her career in marketing for SMEs. A keen interest in web development and marketing, she taught herself SEO and has been blogging ever since. In addition to her blog, which centres around mobile and SEO (of course) she enjoys travelling the world and is currently learning her fourth language. Here she gives Publishers some advice for optimising SEO. Check out her site at SeoJoBlogs.

“If you have an article that you want to publish, you want to make sure that your article is seen by as many unique visitors as possible.  Here are a few ways to do this:

1. Be different
There is a lot of competition out there on the web.  If you are writing an article, make it stand out. Make sure it has a catchy and informative header that encourages visitors to read on. Try being controversial or provocative to grab reader interest and attention.  For example if you are writing about the increase of social networking sites, I suggest you use the title “Facebook’s user base has topped 300 million” instead of “There are lots of social networking sites”.

2. Share
If you are hosting the post on your own website, install social bookmarks such as Digg and StumbleUpon so that if someone likes what they see, they can bookmark the information and tell  their online friends.  You are encouraging your visitors to take part in viral marketing – spreading the word about your article.

3. Links
Don’t be afraid to link to the source of your article.  Readers will appreciate you giving them more information and they will like going to the source and finding out more.  If they liked your article they will come back.

4. Short and sweet
Internet articles tend to be shorter – keep the article between 200 - 400 words and make sure the paragraphs are clearly spaced and easy to read.  A lot of your visitors will be scanning the articles to take the best information so make sure these parts stand out.

5. Keywords
Make sure your article is centred around keywords.  You can use keyword tools to help you find the best terms for your site.  Google keyword tool is very popular and will let you know the competition for a particular term and give you suggestions of other keywords to use. Having a keyword rich header is always a great start, and use your first paragraph to get across your article’s key message. Your text shouldn’t look too “stuffed” full of keywords so ensure that you find various synonyms to include throughout, a technique very important for SEO. An acceptable keyword density percentage is 3 to 4%.

6. Optimise social media
To increase visibility of the article, you need to promote it.  If you already have an online presence in social media, make sure there are links from your social networking sites. If you have followers on twitter, tweet about the new article you wrote with a link to the url. If you have a linkedin account, post a link to the article on your profile page.

7. Topical
Make sure your article is topical.  If you are writing about mobile phones, talk about the latest mobile phones, the Palm Pre on O2, or the iPhone on Orange.  You want your readers to know that you are aware of the latest news and they can come to you to find it.

8. Expertise
Build on the topical information and you can become an expert in their area. Once you find a topic that you are interested in and write about that is relevant news, stick to it.  You may even find people wanting to link to you. Perhaps write a series of posts on the same topic, or start a blog carnival with other bloggers.

9. Give away information
Don’t try and sell your products or service in the article.  If you are going to write a lot of articles, people will value your opinions and when they are ready will buy from your site because they trust and value your articles.

10. Interact with your audience
Throw up questions, start debates, polls. If you receive comments, make sure you respond to them.  Visitors like to see their comments are well received.  Comments are also a great way to add additional content to your site.

By following these tips you should be able to increase interest and traffic to your articles”

Some great advice there, a big thanks to Jo Turnbull from seojoblogs.com!

Adding shopping content to your site

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Devising advertising strategy is one of the most difficult tasks that our Publishers face when joining our affiliate program.

Monetize your website - try adding shopping content

Monetize your website - try adding shopping content

Whether you already have a website or you are building one, the key is to plan the content you want to include. Think ahead of the topics you want to write about (adding category structure to your website/blog will not only  help you with your writing but will make it easier to navigate through your site!) and make sure that at least one of them is commercially oriented.

Example: you are a music buff and you own a website dedicated to classical music. Every day you write about your favourite concerts, arias…But how can you monetize this content? How about adding a category dedicated to albums/books reviews? or instruments? - topics that like-minded visitors of your website might be interested in reading and, most importantly, you can cash in on!

The key to creating good shopping content is relevancy: your ads have to be relevant to your content in order to spark interest in your visitors. Linking to LCD TVs on a cycling website is unlikely to bring you revenue, but the same ad placed on a DVD review site - it’s  a different story!

If you have any questions on how to implement our ads or you need advice on making your website/blog profitable, give us a shout!

How many ads are too many?

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

If you are new to affiliate marketing you are probably asking yourself questions about how to make the most of your adverts?

Many believe that the answer is in sheer volume: “if you have enough banners on your site, someone must finally click on at least one?”. At Shopzilla Publisher UK, we don’t restrict the number of adverts you can place on your webpage, but we actively encourage our Publishers to optimize their ads thus limiting the displayed ads to the best performing ones!

Here are a few tips you might find helpful:

  • Remember, “what’s good for the goose is good for the gander” is not always true when it comes to advertising so test different formats of the ads and find out what works best for you! How? With the use of ID-placements.
  • Try to “refresh” your banners ever so often. (It’s particularly important with static banners!). This way you have the opportunity to convert your returning visitors!
  • If you want to maximize the possibility of a click, think of embedding text links in your text. Using text links enables you to turn every reference to a product into revenue opportunity! Read more about how to use the Publisher program for custom text links.

As always, if you have any questions, please contact us using the contact form.
