Twitter for Bloggers

Monday, March 1st, 2010

We all know how fast Twitter has taken off over the last year or two and how many people now connect themselves every second to other users around the world. This real-time medium enables millions of Tweets to be exchanged worldwide and is now one of the most talked about social media strategies for promoting and marketing businesses.

twitter

So why should bloggers engage in this Tweet-world?

It is a great way to build communities around your brand or blog. By communicating with like minded people (aim for targeted followers and follow those whose interests lie in the same field) you create an awareness of your blog and increase visitor numbers to your site.

Tweet about your latest blog post, or throw a question out there to get a discussion started. Whatever you decide to tweet, make it relevant to your site or the subject on which you base your blog (without spamming) and include links and tags. The tags help fellow tweet-folks find you on a keyword search and can be a great way of increasing the number of people that see your Tweet.

Keep an eye on the Trending Topics and if you have something to say, use these keywords as a basis - you’ll find you appear amongst the hundreds of others tweeting about this particular area and again, increase the likelihood people will find you and start following you. All this generates those much needed visitor numbers to your blog and guess what…it’s all free!

A great post which gives more of an insight into the way bloggers can make the most out of Twitter can be found here on Social Media Examiner. Darren Rowse, more widely known as the man behind Problogger.net, gives an interview with some great advice on Twitter for bloggers.

Finding a Niche for Your Content Site

Thursday, February 18th, 2010
Searching for a niche?

Searching for a niche?

How do you choose which niche to promote? And how do you find a successful one?

The best piece of advice we have seen so far is this: write about what interests you.

Affiliates often find that the content needed for creating a successful website can be a slow slog and is often difficult to keep constant (check out our post on Overcoming Writer’s Block for ideas on how to inspire fresh content). So, if you start with a niche in which you’re already interested, one of your hobbies perhaps (?), then without realising it you already have that much needed content. If, for example, you’re a golf addict who likes nothing better than to spend a Sunday on the course, blog about your games and offer tips for better play or advice on which clubs to buy.

As for choosing a successful niche - do some research before jumping in; search Google AdWords for a keyword match estimate and see how popular a chosen niche or keyword is. This will also give you ideas for a domain name which, as we know, can be an important part of SEO.

Do some searches on Google to have a look at the types of sites that appear in the search results for any one, or a combination, of keyword (s). You’ll know what you’re up against then.

If you’ve still no idea what you want to write about, get creative and think about what people look for these days. Can you answer a question for your readers? Can you provide information on a subject for which there’s not much information available on the net? Get talking. The more you talk to others, the more likely you are to find that niche you’ve been looking for.

Adopting Social Media Strategies

Communicate with your readers via Social Media

Communicate with your readers via Social Media

Social Media is the phrase on everybody’s lips at the moment…can adopting a Social Media Strategy really help your site? The answer is, yes. It’s a channel of promotion, but, most importantly, a channel of communication. How you advertise your site to others is crucial in helping drive more traffic and attaining that all important ranking in Google.

The best thing about Social Media is that it doesn’t cost you a penny! A wise and well thought out strategy can  really make a difference.

1. Communicate regularly on Twitter.
Twitter is now widely accepted as one of the best forms of communication and reaching out to fellow bloggers/site owners. If you begin tweeting your posts and articles you will find you can create a little community and a higher volume of traffic will naturally find it’s way to your site. Be careful not to spam though as this only serves to decrease interest. (Tip: Add the Twitter plug-in and everytime you publish a post your tweets will automatically be updated).

2. Add social bookmark links to your site.
Many sites such as Delicious, Stumble Upon and AddThis are just waiting for you to begin sharing your website with their user base!

3. Facebook it.
Set up a fan page dedicated to your site. Reply to any messages and ask all your friends and family to become fans! It helps spread the word about your site and distributes your content further.

4. Integrate RSS.
This tool allows you to provide your readers with the latest up-t0-date post on your site. Encourage them to subscribe so they will be informed as soon as your content goes live!

5. Interact with your visitors.
Reply to comments on your blog with personal messages - this makes for great interaction with the people that matter most - your readers. And if you own a website, think about creating your own blog and linking to it. The more interaction with your core reader, the better.

So, there you go. A few ideas as to how you can increase your social media interaction and communicate your website to the world. By no means are these exhaustive so keep doing your research and look out for the latest Social Media trends - there are always new mediums to be found, it’s just a case of being creative and using them to your advantage.

5 Tips for Fresh Content - When Writing Gets Difficult

Monday, February 1st, 2010
Fresh out of ideas?

Fresh out of ideas?

Providing insightful and consistent content on your website is one of the best ways to keep your readers interested and those visitor numbers up! It plays a vital role in that all important SEO.

If you have a slight case of writer’s block , though, and sometimes struggle to think of ideas for your blog, have a read below for some tips on how to generate fresh content.

1. Have a change of environment.

If you’re working non-stop behind your computer for hours on end, take a break and go for a walk. Often one of the best ways to overcome writer’s block is just getting away from your environment for a short while. Its’ wondrous what half an hour of fresh air can do for the brain! You may even see something along the way that inspires you.

2. Do some research.

Read other people’s articles around your subject area and see if these evoke any potential ideas for blog posts or articles for your own site. Maybe a combination of all the articles you read will inspire you, or even provoke you to talk about the key points mentioned but taking it on a different slant, with your own personal opinions.

3. Talk to peers.

Do you have friends in the same field? Prod them for advice on what’s hot at the moment or ask if they have some thoughts on interesting areas within your subject. You could even blog about an interesting conversation you had. For example, if you write about football and have a friend who holds a season ticket, start a debate with him on who should go up in the league - be sure to get his side of the arguement and blog about it. Your readers will be delighted to get involved in the discussion which may encourage them to leave comments and therefore heighten the debate (and interest) even more!

4. Re-use an old post

Don’t be afraid to unleash it once again from the depths of your blog or website. You may think everyone has already read it but think again! There are millions and millions of internet users out there so don’t think you’ll be boring your readers with a recycled post; in fact, if it was a popular one, who’s to say it can’t start an attention grabbing discussion once again?

5. Write honestly

The number of times people try to write content that they think their visitor wants to read instead of writing just for writing, is incredible. The only way to generate those high visitor numbers and reader loyalty is to write from the heart. Imagine talking to yourself…and then add some punctuation marks! Once you’ve finished the post, if you think it sounds too impersonal, go back and modify it. This applies especially to review sites - if readers don’t think you are being honest behind a product review, how are they to trust your opinions?

Remember that writer’s block happens to the best of us and can be extremely frustrating when it occurs. Some of the greatest authors of all time have experienced the same thing, and more than once. But they got through it, and so will you. It may take perhaps a stroll through the park, an unexpected lunch date or even conversations with friends, (don’t forget that different writers are inspired by different stimuli) but you’ll soon see that the creativeness and ability you already possess  for fresh content are not hard to restore!

Make Money Through Your Product Review Links

Friday, January 29th, 2010

If you often write product reviews on your website or have a site dedicated solely to those reviews, be sure to make the most out of your affiliate links and use where possible. For example, if the content of your post is based on Ipods, link to an ipod landing page when you mention the latest device.

Your money's in the bag with product review links

Your money's in the bag with product review links

Your readers may be interested in garnering a little extra information about the products you are reviewing so showing them where to buy is always a good option for any affiliate. This way, you are providing your users with a rich source of information, as well as interesting (and often helpful!) reviews. Additionally, it can help them make an informed decision if choosing between certain items or wondering where to buy the product. Price comparison sites such as Shopzilla.co.uk and Bizrate.co.uk are great for enabling your visitors to see the difference in ££££s between the various merchants selling that particular item.

comparison-shopping

Don’t forget to link around the topic area as well. When talking about the latest Nikon Digital Camera, link to tripods, camera cases, lenses etc - anything your visitors may also be interested in buying. Why not make a little money for helping out your readers with useful shopping advice?

For every link you incorporate into your site  you could be earning, so don’t miss out on those invaluable opportunities!

Affiliate Resolutions 2010 : Making the Most Out of Your Affiliate Program

Monday, January 11th, 2010

Happy New Year, Publishers!

New Year's Resolutions 2010

Start the new year in style with ideas for Resolutions!

If you haven’t quite got round to making your new year’s resolutions yet, no need to worry because here in the Shopzilla UK Publisher Team we’ve come up with some great ideas which pave the way for a fantastic 2010!

1. Adapt your shopping content to your site.

Keeping shopping content on your website relevant to its focus is a sure-fire way to retain audience interest and perhaps generate even more clicks. Your readers won’t want to see adverts for games consoles if your site is about home and garden furniture so try to keep that in mind when integrating shopping content.

2. More dialogue with the UK Publisher Team.

Don’t be afraid to give us a shout if you’re in need of help. We’re here to be of assistance and we appreciate the feedback as much as we’re sure you’d appreciate the help. You can reach out to Diana, Emma or Yohan in the UK Publisher Team and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can!

3. Update your Payment Information.

You would be surprised at the number of Publishers who do not update their payment information. Remember to include your PayPal address once you’ve activated your account; you may need to give the activation a little time to process after which you will see an Add Payment Info button. If you move, change your email or PayPal account please let us know!

4. Get the most out of Placement IDs.

This feature is great if you have more than one asset on your website. You can track which ad performs better and know what appeals to your audience the most. Use the View Reports tool in your Publisher account to measure and evaluate traffic. If you’re unsure on how to create Placement IDs, please check our blog posts.

5. Try out Shopzilla’s Dynamic Assets.

We introduced our dynamic content early last year. The ads automatically re-generate themselves always showing the most up-to-date  Shopzilla products within the asset. Even better news for our Publishers - when you integrate one of these assets, let us know and we’ll add £5 to your Publisher account!

6. Stay in the loop of what’s happening in the Affiliate world.

Check out forums such as the A4U Forum for extra hints and tips and great blogs. Affiliate StuffAffiliate Marketing Blog and Fish and Clicks are to name but a few.

7. Reapply!

If you have previously applied for our FTP Data Feeds or even a Publisher account but were rejected and your site has since changed, please feel free to reapply! It can often happen that we reconsider an application when a Publisher has further developed his/her website.

8. Don’t overpopulate!

As much as it may sound like the best way to gain clicks, overcrowding your website with too many ads often just makes it illegible and unattractive to potential visitors. Remember it is the visitors you should be wanting to keep interested, and if the content-ad ratio doesn’t synchronise, you may loose some of those crucial readers. How many ads are too many? Have a look at our blog post for tips.

9. Stay informed by the Publisher Team.

We have many options for you to choose from - follow us on Twitter at @Shopzillauk, subscribe to our RSS feed or read our regular blog updates. We give you the latest info on what’s happening in the affiliate and Shopzilla Publisher world.

10. Keep up-to-date with Affiliate Events.

It’s always good to have a rough idea of dates for the various affiliate events of the year. They offer great opportunities for procuring contacts, gleaning advice and networking by getting your name/site out there. The A4Uexpo conferences are always a highlight (note to self: 18-19th May 2010 in Munich) and give you a chance to get in on those best-practice  exchanges!

So, there you are. Some of our handy hints to get you well on your way to affiliate success!

If you have any other suggestions which you may feel would be helpful to others, please feel free to contact us. Otherwise, take a look at Search Engine Land’s post on The Big List: 2010 Marketing Predictions & Resolutions for some excellent tips and information. Beginner’s Guide to Affiliate Marketing

Friday, December 4th, 2009

So you’ve just gotten into the world of Affiliate Marketing (otherwise known as AM) and wondering where to start? When you know what you’re doing it’s easy, but when you don’t, you may feel slightly overwhelmed by all the information suddenly thrust upon you.

Start learning about affiliate marketing today

Start learning about affiliate marketing today

What is Affiliate Marketing?

“Affiliate marketing is an Internet-based marketing  practice in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate’s marketing effort” (definition by Wikipedia). There are literally tens of thousands of companies wanting you to promote their products online. It can be very profitable when practiced wisely and correctly.  The main goal is to drive visitors to your website in order to get vital clicks on your site’s ads which can be in the form of creative banners, text links, search boxes and product pods amongst others. Shopzilla’s Publisher program has many formats for you to choose from.

How does it work?

As a good affiliate marketer you should have many (if not all) of the following attributes:

  • Determination - affiliate marketing does not make you rich overnight. It can be a tiring process that involves determination and hard-work
  • Self belief - you have to believe that it will work
  • Self discipline - the more often you can write posts/content on your site, the better your site, therefore the higher the likelihood of increased revenue
  • Imagination - great content is the key to affiliate marketing. This keeps your visitors coming back for more! Play around with various content and subject ideas, get creative and try out what works best for you and your site
  • Ability to stick with a project - this ties in with determination; make one project great, rather than lots of little projects average
  • Focus - know what you want to write about and stick to it
  • Patience - there can often be difficulties and frustrations that you encounter along the way; don’t give up

You will need to be committed as this is a long-term process; remember that you only get paid if and when you deliver results.  Have a look at our SEO (Search Engine optimisation) tips post for more detailed advice on optimising your site.

One of the best tips we can actually give you, is to start off by joining one or two affiliate programs to familiarise yourself with the way it all works, and join those that offer contextually relevant ads. It is widely known that targeting your visitors with ads that correspond to your content or subject area will more than likely increase the chances that your readers will click. If you’re worried about the ethics behind affiliate marketing, however, (a topic often widely debated), you needn’t worry. Follow our ethical hints for peace of mind.

Benefits of affiliate marketing:

  • Monetise your website: it may often be a form of passive income - even if you go away on holiday, if you have great content your visitors will still be coming regardless of whether you are online yourself.
  • Add shopping content for the readers: this will be useful, especially if you can also provide reviews
  • No selling responsibilty: you don’t need to sell your own product but you can make money by promoting those of others. You have no responsibility for the after-sales service or stock and delivery as it is all handled by the merchant.

How do I make money?

You promote products and are rewarded for your efforts. This is all possible because the traffic you send/the sales you make are tracked to you and each affiliates website link is encoded with a unique ID tracking code. This tags the traffic or sale to your account.

It is worth mentioning that many programs operate in different ways and choosing the right one depends on various factors such as the content of your site, the number of visitors you recieve or your own objectives. (*Note: many programs offer efficient reporting tools which make it easy to compare the success off different approaches. Shopzilla tries it’s best to help you compare us against other programs. Read more..) You will undoubtedly have come across the various payment models which include:

1. CPC (cost per click) – The visitor clicks on a link through the affiliate website.

2. CPA (cost per action) – The visitor purchases a product or a service. It could represent any call for action that took place.

- CPL (cost per lead) – The visitor completes a lead form (variant of the CPA model)

- CPS (cost per sale) - The visitor purchases a product or service (variant of the CPA model)

3. CPM (cost per 1000th impression) - The affiliate is paid for every 1000 ad impressions

Depending on the type of program you sign up for, you may experience one or all of these methods.  Experiment and find the best which works for you. It is worth noting that the Shopzilla UK Publisher program pays on a CPC-based model (there aren’t many programs that do offer this) and is free to join so test it out for yourself and see how much you can earn.

It’s a lot to get your head around and there is certainly a vast amount left unsaid. However, keep an eye out for further hints and tips or please feel free to contact us if you have any questions, we will be happy to assist.
