Wishing you a very Merry Christmas

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas

We’d like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

It doesn’t seem so long ago that Halloween was the focus of all our festivities and now Christmas has arrived! Well, the last 9 months since the program first launched in the UK have been fantastic for us all.

Some highlights from 2009:

  • The launch of the French and German Publisher Programs in September and October
  • Introduction of our Dynamic Assets giving Publishers the freedom to choose the products they wish to advertise
  • The release of our ftp data feeds enabling Publishers to download the Shopzilla inventory either wholly or partially

We also attended some great events in 2009 including various networking events and in particular the A4uexpo Europe in Amsterdam in April, the E-Commerce held in Paris in September, DMexco in Munich also in September, Ad-Tech London and the A4UExpo both in October and not forgetting the monthly London Bloggers Meetup evenings. We’ve had the chance to meet some wonderful and really interesting people so we’re looking forward to a successful 2010!

The regular updates on the Publisher blog will begin again as usual in January so keep an eye out for the latest Publisher news.

On a final note it’s not too late for you to integrate your Christmas dynamic banners and reap the rewards for those Christmas sales.

See you next year!

Warm wishes,
The Shopzilla UK Publisher Team

API to be Released Early 2010 - Be One of the First to Know

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

For those of you looking to add a comparison shopping element to your website but who aren’t necessarily super-technically minded or who perhaps just don’t have the time to manage ftp data feeds, we’re excited to tell you that our Catalogue API is coming soon!

What is the Catalogue API?

For anyone who is not familiar with the Catalogue API, this product provides advanced publishers with intuitive access to BizRate’s inventory of catalogued products and merchant offers through a query-based web service accepting various parameters, allowing publishers to filter based on their website’s shopping content needs. Based on these publisher-supplied parameters, customised BizRate shopping content is returned within an XML response.

The API will enable you to dynamically retrieve product results from the BizRate catalogue which means no manual updating. Once installed, you can sit back and relax as the data is called automatically. Commercial access to the API offers website publishers the deepest level of integration to ensure the most contextually relevant display of monetized shopping content.

Whereas the current Shopzilla UK FTP Data Feeds require you to update your site in sync with Shopzilla’s daily updates - our merchants often add new and remove old product offers and even change prices – the API takes away the need to update your product offers everytime they’re updated at the Shopzilla end.

Our API will be available early next year so watch this space for further updates!

*Please let us know if you are interested in this product and we will add you to our priority mailing list – you’ll be the first to know as soon as we release it. If you are not already an affiliate of Shopzilla, please apply for an account.

Publisher Spotlight: interview with Carl, martial arts expert and owner of shadowhand.com

Thursday, December 10th, 2009
Carl Burgess has been involved in web development for over twelve years as a system administrator, developer, tester and site owner. He is a respected author, teacher and international referee of Taijiquan who likes to push the boundaries of his art and how to disseminate it on the web. Here he talks about his site shadowhand.com and his experience with the Shopzilla UK Publisher Program.

Emma: Hi Carl, first of all, thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule to answer our questions. Could you start off by giving us a little introduction about your site?

My site, www.shadowhand.com, has been going for about ten years now and is focussed on the Wudang Style of Taijiquan which is the The martial arts form of T’ai Chi.  I teach from home and decided to start my blog, www.shadowhand.com/blog on how I set up my home dojo. I will start adding my teaching material  at some stage.

Emma: What inspired you to start up the shadowhand blog, why this particular subject?

I have written a book and produced a number of CDs and articles but felt that a more flexible approach was needed to convey what I am doing now.  I generally video my lessons and would like to add commentary and clips on a regular basis rather than taking months to produce a completed full  blown work.

Emma: You’ve been with the Shopzilla UK Publisher Program for a while now – how are you finding it?

It  takes some time to work out how to tailor the ads to your content – i.e what size, colour , shape, orientation etc  so I have been experimenting with all variants to see what works best.
It is good to have a choice of ad type to choose from and be able to configure colours etc.

Emma: I see you’ve added several of our large dynamic assets…how did you find the implementation process?

The Shopzilla system is fairly straightforward to use , the key is to search for your particular subject matter in the BizRate.co.uk site to check on what keywords will find the particular items you want to show and then use those keywords in the Publisher admin to find the appropriate ads. I thought  it was important to match the ads chosen to the particular content  I was writing about to keep it contextual. For example, if I write about boxing gloves, I’ll include an ad showing the gloves, or if you take a look at my headgear post, I’ve integrated an ad displaying items of headguards and head protectors.

Emma: What’s important to you in an affiliate partnership? Are you using any other programs?

Basically good communication, ease of use of the administration system. I am also affiliated with Amazon and Hong Kong Flix. For me, the partnership with Shopzilla’s Publisher program has been a great experience and one that I look forward to continuing.

Emma: How often do you consult our Publisher blog? Do you find it useful in keeping up to date with what’s going on in the Shopzilla Publisher world?

I am a very busy person and so I don’t have much time keeping up with what everyone else is doing. I probably focus about once a month to check up on the statuses of everything.

Emma: And finally…do you have any feedback for us here at Shopzilla i.e. suggestions for improvement?

Maybe some style guidelines for websites which have different layouts i.e. multi-column pages – or perhaps some page templates that fit the ad types might be of help.

Thanks for some great info and feedack, Carl. If you’d like to take a peek at his site, please visit Carl’s  martial arts blog.

Adding Additional Websites to Your Shopzilla UK Publisher Account

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Hi Publishers,

Does the Shopzilla UK Publisher Team know about every site you’re using our content on?  Not only is notifying us of your additional sites part of our terms and conditions, but perhaps your additional sites could get you on our next Publisher in the Spotlight, so keep us in the loop!

The Shopzilla UK Publisher Program allows you to publish our content on any site you operate, as long as we get a chance to review and approve the site.  You do not have to go through registering a new site, you only need to send us the URL and a brief description.  Once we have reviewed and approved your additional sites, you are ready to add new Shopzilla UK Publisher Program content.  When you do this, we strongly suggest you make the most out of Placement IDs so that you are able to track the traffic from each website separately on your earnings report.

Beginner’s Guide to Affiliate Marketing

Friday, December 4th, 2009

So you’ve just gotten into the world of Affiliate Marketing (otherwise known as AM) and wondering where to start? When you know what you’re doing it’s easy, but when you don’t, you may feel slightly overwhelmed by all the information suddenly thrust upon you.

Start learning about affiliate marketing today

What is Affiliate Marketing?

“Affiliate marketing is an Internet-based marketing  practice in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate’s marketing effort” (definition by Wikipedia). There are literally tens of thousands of companies wanting you to promote their products online. It can be very profitable when practiced wisely and correctly.  The main goal is to drive visitors to your website in order to get vital clicks on your site’s ads which can be in the form of creative banners, text links, search boxes and product pods amongst others. Shopzilla’s Publisher program has many formats for you to choose from.

How does it work?

As a good affiliate marketer you should have many (if not all) of the following attributes:

  • Determination - affiliate marketing does not make you rich overnight. It can be a tiring process that involves determination and hard-work
  • Self belief - you have to believe that it will work
  • Self discipline - the more often you can write posts/content on your site, the better your site, therefore the higher the likelihood of increased revenue
  • Imagination - great content is the key to affiliate marketing. This keeps your visitors coming back for more! Play around with various content and subject ideas, get creative and try out what works best for you and your site
  • Ability to stick with a project - this ties in with determination; make one project great, rather than lots of little projects average
  • Focus - know what you want to write about and stick to it
  • Patience - there can often be difficulties and frustrations that you encounter along the way; don’t give up

You will need to be committed as this is a long-term process; remember that you only get paid if and when you deliver results.  Have a look at our SEO (Search Engine optimisation) tips post for more detailed advice on optimising your site.

One of the best tips we can actually give you, is to start off by joining one or two affiliate programs to familiarise yourself with the way it all works, and join those that offer contextually relevant ads. It is widely known that targeting your visitors with ads that correspond to your content or subject area will more than likely increase the chances that your readers will click. If you’re worried about the ethics behind affiliate marketing, however, (a topic often widely debated), you needn’t worry. Follow our ethical hints for peace of mind.

Benefits of affiliate marketing:

  • Monetise your website: it may often be a form of passive income - even if you go away on holiday, if you have great content your visitors will still be coming regardless of whether you are online yourself.
  • Add shopping content for the readers: this will be useful, especially if you can also provide reviews
  • No selling responsibilty: you don’t need to sell your own product but you can make money by promoting those of others. You have no responsibility for the after-sales service or stock and delivery as it is all handled by the merchant.

How do I make money?

You promote products and are rewarded for your efforts. This is all possible because the traffic you send/the sales you make are tracked to you and each affiliates website link is encoded with a unique ID tracking code. This tags the traffic or sale to your account.

It is worth mentioning that many programs operate in different ways and choosing the right one depends on various factors such as the content of your site, the number of visitors you recieve or your own objectives. (*Note: many programs offer efficient reporting tools which make it easy to compare the success off different approaches. Shopzilla tries it’s best to help you compare us against other programs. Read more..) You will undoubtedly have come across the various payment models which include:

1. CPC (cost per click) – The visitor clicks on a link through the affiliate website.

2. CPA (cost per action) – The visitor purchases a product or a service. It could represent any call for action that took place.

- CPL (cost per lead) – The visitor completes a lead form (variant of the CPA model)

- CPS (cost per sale) - The visitor purchases a product or service (variant of the CPA model)

3. CPM (cost per 1000th impression) - The affiliate is paid for every 1000 ad impressions

Depending on the type of program you sign up for, you may experience one or all of these methods.  Experiment and find the best which works for you. It is worth noting that the Shopzilla UK Publisher program pays on a CPC-based model (there aren’t many programs that do offer this) and is free to join so test it out for yourself and see how much you can earn.

It’s a lot to get your head around and there is certainly a vast amount left unsaid. However, keep an eye out for further hints and tips or please feel free to contact us if you have any questions, we will be happy to assist.
